Carl Jung defines the term "persona" as a Latin word for "mask" and refers to the social roles and behaviors people display in public rather than their inherent self.
“The Masquerade” depicts figures who wear these facial coverings, leaving little room for the actual self, even when surrounded by their closest family members and friends.
The painting represents black-and-white figures who appear in a play, wearing colored masks that stand out. The compositional imbalance created by the masks draws visual attention to the element that stands out most – the mask. The whole setup feels as though it is a theatrical design for a stage, which in turn suggests that everyone acts and hides behind a facade.
